Go Natural! Fabric Softeners and Bed Sheets
On our care instructions for One Bed sheets throughout, we recommend not using fabric softeners with your One Bed sheets.
Any high quality, natural fabric bed sheets or items should generally not use artificial fabric softeners. This is not unique to One Bed sheets - though we think One Bed sheets are unique in combining quality and better function!
Fabric softeners are often made with chemicals that can break down the cotton or fabric fibers over time, which can reduce the lifespan of your sheets, become rougher over time (ironically, as fabric fibers break down), and fade their color.
Dryer sheets tend to be worse than fabric softeners; in general, this conclusion has been the consensus. Dryer sheets can coat the fabric with harmful chemicals and substances, which have the same effect of weakening the fibers.
Unfortunately, this conclusion to avoid fabric softeners and dryer sheets is a generalization. Of course, there are many products looking to do better. Do your research, which is easy to do these days, and natural generally is better.
So, how else can you soften your sheets? One Bed sheets get softer with washing, so how do you accelerate and ensure soft sheets?
Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the best. You can use some common (and cheap) household items:
- 6 cups vinegar (distilled, white recommended)
- 1 cup baking soda
- 10 to 15 drop essential oil (optional)
You can either use around a cup of this homemade fabric softener with a light detergent, something like the Clear & Light detergent options.
Or, you can dip & wring a clean cleaning sponge with your homemade fabric softener and put in with your load of laundry.
It may be a cliché, but we really agree that natural is better - most of the time. Of course, there are man-made inventions that make your life better. Frankly, that's OK.
However, when it comes to bed sheets that you are contacted with a third of your life (if you're lucky enough to get that much sleep), we think it's better to err on the side of natural solutions.
Here at One Bed, we are doing our own tests, and we'll share any further findings, product picks, and recommendations with our customers. We want you to have the best experience (in bed) that make you sleep better, feel better, and be a more healthy you!
